2021 Program Schedule

Our Board is planning on meeting at the end of January to discuss a program schedule for this year. We think these programs will most likely be virtual for the foreseeable future. Membership dues notices have gone out and they are due and payable for the year.

Annual (virtual) Meeting

The Big Sur Historical Society had our annual Christmas potluck “meeting” on December 5th, minus the potluck! We attempted our first-ever virtual program and we think for our first venture it worked out pretty well! Thank you so much to our Board member, David Woods, for all his work making it happen! We also conducted our usual business of approving our Board slate for next year and next year’s budget.

Save Our History

Already during the recent fires there have been losses of priceless irreplaceable historical items like pictures and diaries with some of these dating back to the 1800s. Some of us here in Big Sur know all too well how devastating these losses can be.

Annual Christmas Potluck

The BSHS held their annual members only Christmas program potluck on December 7th at Rancho Grande. We are always grateful to be able to use the house for our event! There were almost fifty members there, all bringing for everyone’s delicious enjoyment a buffet of different dishes to have for dinner. Heather Foster’s chicken pot pie brought rave reviews from everyone who sampled it!

Fall Program

Our fall program this year was a Members only potluck held at our Museum at Molera. As it was pretty windy on the ridge I feared the worst knowing that Molera is almost always even windier. We were really lucky in that while it was definitely breezy it seemed to be blowing much higher up in the trees and where we sat at our picnic tables in front of the Museum it was actually quite pleasant.

Stanley Harlan

On June 25th the BSHS hosted another program and book signing at the Grange! This time we had long time Big Sur resident Stanley Harlan come and reminisce about his and his family’s life and times in Big Sur. It was a whole other world back then with abundant abalone and trout, herding the pigs through the coast range to King City, Highway One being dug by steam shovel right through their front yard and the hard work everyone, including the children, did as a way of life.

The Honey Bus

On May 18th the BSHS hosted a program and book signing at the Grange. Author Meredith May came to talk about her book “The Honey Bus” and her Grandfather Franklin Peace. Franklin was a descendant of the Post family and a resident of Big Sur and Carmel Valley.
