Fall Program

Big Sur Historical Society Potluck
Our fall program this year was a Members only potluck held at our Museum at Molera.  As it was pretty windy on the ridge I feared the worst knowing that Molera is almost always even windier.  We were really lucky in that while it was definitely breezy it seemed to be blowing much higher up in the trees and where we sat at our picnic tables in front of the Museum it was actually quite pleasant.

We had almost forty people attend bringing potluck dishes!  Our program was to showcase our existing BSHS cookbook and have everyone make a recipe from the book to bring.  We also shared with the members the exciting news that we will be starting to work on a new cookbook and any help with it would be welcomed.  The members also had the chance to tour the Museum and look at the displays.
Heather Lanier, as our BSHS Program Manager, had things well in hand and would write the name of each dish next to it as well as whose recipe it was, on a long piece of butcher paper she had rolled out on the “banquet” table.  Later on after everyone had partaken of what was quite the feast, we talked about the people who had contributed the recipes, some who are now no longer with us, and their lives in Big Sur.  Between everyone there we came up with quite a few recollections, and perhaps a few speculations.  Years of hearsay were set straight about “Peter Stock’s” lemon bars and brownies by Peter himself!

Stanley Harlan told us about how when flailing beans his Uncle Marion lost his eye!  Not always the good old days clearly!  Carol Shadwell reminisced about her Grandmother Jean, (applesauce cake) and her performances in the Review(s).  Cody Oliver shared a fun story about Fay (Russian vegetable pie) Harrington at Deetjens.  It was an epicurean walk down memory lane and a fun evening for all!

Thank you to Cody Oliver, Jess Mason, Miles McBreen and our deputy Jesse Villasenor for all their hard work tidying up the Museum!!
